Quinn Vehicles are one of the leading refrigerated vehicle and specialist body manufacturers in Ireland and UK. They are a family-owned and run business, dating back to 1804, who have adapted their business over many years to meet the growing demands of the transport industry.

Each of their vehicles and components is custom-built under one roof in their 70,000 sq.ft facility in Athenry, Co Galway to meet individual client’s needs. This gives them total control over quality ensuring every fridge body is built to the highest standard.

The Challenge.

Quinn Vehicles produce a wide range of specialist emergency response vehicles. They approached LBS with a desire to make improvements to their production capacity, and increase ambulance production from 5 units to 7 units per week.

A Collaborative Solution.

Upon conducting a detailed assessment of their business and production facility, we suggested the following improvements:

Introducing and training key management and production staff on Lean concepts and simulation.
Implement a new layout in the assembly area using Lean pull techniques.
Implement a new layout in door assembly area for Ambulance build.
Develop and implement a paint sequence schedule to supply components to deliver units per week.
Design and build trolleys and jigs for a new line.

We then developed a bespoke lean programme designed to positively impact these three areas. The programme included training courses on Lean Yellow Belt, Lean Green Belt, Visual Management, Detailed Process Mapping, Customer Journey Mapping, Strategy Deployment/Hoshin planning, and Finance for Non-Finance Managers.

Impact and Results.

40% increase in output from 5 units per week to 7 units per week.
28% productivity improvement saving over 700 labour hours per ambulance.
